MEERKERK HOUSE MAKEOVER

THE FUTURE IS NOW

FOR AN EXCITING NEW SPACE TO GATHER, LEARN AND CELEBRATE!

Meerkerk Gardens is a legacy from Ann and Max Meerkerk who bought the property and moved to Whidbey Island in the early 1960s.

Working with a Coupeville architect, they built their mid-century modern home in 1962. Nestled in the woods with views of Holmes Harbor, the house boasts many cherished architectural features typical of the time.

While Meerkerk Gardens opened to the public 30 years ago fulfilling the Meerkerks’ wishes upon death, the house has not been public – yet! Exciting plans have commenced to renovate this “diamond in the rough.” This project is perhaps Meerkerk’s most ambitious project to date! The goal is to breathe life into this extraordinary venue, which will provide the community with a new space to collaborate, educate and celebrate!

The Meerkerk House will also house a historical display of the founders and history of the Gardens. Architectural plans and permits are currently underway, so stay tuned for more news in the coming months!

In Memoriam

In February a dear friend of Meerkerk, Lyn Murphy, passed away peacefully at her home in Oak Harbor.  She and her husband, Frank, were friends of Ann Meerkerk. Both Lyn and Ann were weavers and Frank took on the task of shearing Ann’s sheep so they would have wool. Lyn and Frank lent Meerkerk several of Ann’s art pieces for the Meerkerk exhibit at the Coupeville Museum in the summer of 2021. When the items were returned to Lyn, she generously donated a small loom made by Ann to Meerkerk which will be on display after the renovation of the House this summer.
